From Burnout to Balance: My Journey in Activism
In 2016, I stepped onto my college campus with a fire in my heart and a 'Bernie' button on my backpack. Little did I know that my passion for political activism would lead me on a journey of self-discovery, burnout, and ultimately, inner peace.
The Passionate Beginning
As a youthful energetic 18 year old, I threw myself into the Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign with every ounce of energy I had. I attended rallies, engaged in heated debates with friends and family, and spent countless hours phone banking and canvassing. I was fighting for equality and justice for all, and it felt exhilarating.
The Dark Reality
As I dropped deeper into activism, I began to see the world through a new lens. The systemic oppression and injustices I uncovered were overwhelming. I felt sick to my stomach, angry at the world, and convinced that life was nothing but suffering. The weight of these realizations crushed my spirit, and my once-passionate activism turned into bitter cynicism.
The Turning Point
I realized that my anger and despair weren't helping anyone—least of all myself. I was burnt out, disillusioned, and on the verge of giving up. That's when I understood that to be an effective advocate for others, I needed to first find peace within myself.
The Journey Inward
I began exploring mindfulness, meditation, and self-care practices. It wasn't easy at first—I felt guilty for taking time for myself when there was so much work to be done. But gradually, I noticed a shift. As I cultivated inner peace, I became more resilient, more compassionate, and ironically, a more effective activist.
Finding Joy in the Fight
Today, I approach activism with a balanced perspective. I still fight passionately for what I believe in, but I do so from a place of inner strength and joy. I've learned to celebrate small victories, to find beauty in the struggle, and to take care of myself along the way.
